Part of the 80’s Child Is Full of Woe Collection
This piece began as an acrylic painting, became an oil painting, and then became something else again as I continued layering oil over oil. Working with the paint I had, I reached for colors bolder and more striking than my usual palette. I applied them with a palette knife, layering bright color against deep darks, then scraping through the surface to create scribbles, marks, and glimpses of what came before.
At the Edge feels like the very end of the ’80s—not because of what was happening culturally, but because of where I was in my own childhood. Those were some of the final years before I became more aware of how other people saw me. The ’90s would bring mean girls, being made fun of, and the painful end of dance lessons. But I didn’t know any of that yet.
The bright colors were still there. The freedom was still there. The world was still full of possibility. Looking at this painting now, though, I can feel something else beginning to push through.
