I have always been nostalgic.
Even as a little kid, I remember longing for earlier times. It's strange to think about now. I was a child without much of a past of my own, and yet I already understood the feeling of missing something.
This painting has a past of its own.
I originally painted it in December 2024 and called it The Journey. It was an acrylic painting with gold leaf. Nearly two years later, I returned to it, rubbing blue, white, and pink oil paint into the dried acrylic surface and scribbling across it with blue and violet oil sticks.
The earlier painting hasn't disappeared. Its texture, marks, and flashes of gold remain underneath and between the newer layers.
When I look at it now, the colors stir that same longing I remember from childhood. Long afternoons in the backyard. The strange expansiveness of being little. The feeling that there was always somewhere else to wander off to in your imagination.
Part of the 80's Child Is Full of Woe collection, Backyard Longing holds that particular ache of childhood—the strange experience of being nostalgic even while you are still living inside the years you will someday miss.
When you purchase an original, if you don’t choose to pick it up from the studio you will be sent an additional invoice for shipping costs.
