I couldn't figure out what this painting wanted to be.
I had been working on it for months, layering oil over an earlier mixed media and acrylic painting, changing it again and again without ever feeling like I had found it.
Then 80's Child Is Full of Woe began to emerge, and suddenly this painting had somewhere to belong.
Its colors are bolder and more intense than much of the collection. They remind me of a particular feeling I remember from childhood—the moment when something colorful and familiar could suddenly become a little dangerous.
I think about an episode of My Little Pony where the ponies were hanging on by their hooves, barely able to hold on. I remember the feeling of watching it. The danger felt real. I was scared for them.
But somewhere underneath that fear was hope. You knew they weren't going to kill the ponies.
Return to Oz carries that same tension for me. Not because this painting looks like the movie, but because I remember the world of Oz suddenly feeling stranger and more dangerous than I expected it to be. Dorothy was still Dorothy. There was still magic and wonder. But safety wasn't quite as certain as it had been before.
