This is where the collection began.
I wasn't thinking about the 80s or trying to make a painting about childhood. I began with an acrylic underpainting, layering oil over it and following the colors instinctively.
Something about them felt deeply familiar.
The bright primary colors underneath, softened and transformed by layers of oil, stirred something I recognized before I understood what I was remembering. There were echoes of Rainbow Brite, Care Bears, My Little Pony, Saturday morning cartoons, cereal boxes, toys, and the saturated world of my childhood.
The colors knew before I did.
Starlight Brite became the first painting in the 80's Child Is Full of Woe collection and the piece that opened the door to everything that followed. It reminded me that memory doesn't always return as a story. Sometimes it arrives first as a color, a texture, a feeling—a recognition in the body that comes before we have words for what we've remembered.
When you purchase an original, if you don’t choose to pick it up from the studio you will be sent an additional invoice for shipping costs.
