When I was little, I had a knowing.
It wasn't something anyone had taught me. I felt it somewhere deep in my heart and mind, ancient and certain. I knew magic was real. I knew witches were real. I knew the stones and crystals I collected and called amulets held power.
Maybe you could call it imagination. But that word has never felt big enough for what I remember.
I would spend hours in the backyard carrying these thoughts with me, collecting stones, creating worlds, believing there were things we couldn't see but could somehow know.
Growing up didn't entirely convince me otherwise.
I still believe in magic, although I understand it differently now. I see it in kindness and generosity, in the faith we bring to something and the hope we carry when there is no guarantee of what comes next. And I still believe in witches—the wise women, the women who refuse to shrink, who trust their intelligence, hold their power, and do not step back from what they know.
This piece began in layers of mixed media on linen that I stretched by hand, much of it eventually obscured beneath layers of oil paint. What remains underneath is still part of the painting even when it can no longer be seen.
Part of the 80's Child Is Full of Woe collection, this piece returns to something I knew as a child and spent years finding my way back to: not everything has to be visible to be real.
When you purchase an original, if you don’t choose to pick it up from the studio you will be sent an additional invoice for shipping costs.
