Materials: Handwoven mixed fibers, fabric, paper, yarn, and wool roving on wood dowel.
Dimensions: 45 × 17 inches (including fringe). Hanging dowel: 23 inches.
As I started weaving, I couldn't quite place what felt familiar about it.
Then it came to me.
It reminded me of the rag rugs I loved as a child.
I don't remember where they were or who made them. I only remember feeling that they were beautiful. For me this piece stirs that same feeling, along with flashes of Strawberry Shortcake, colorful yarn, soft textures, and the particular way childhood seemed to experience color before it had language for design or nostalgia.
This weaving began with fabric already in my studio, cut into long strips and knotted together to create the warp. From there I wove paper, yarn, wool roving, and found fibers into a surface.
Part of the 80's Child Is Full of Woe collection, this piece explores how ordinary objects, textures, and colors become woven into memory, carrying emotions that often outlast the stories themselves.
*This piece is almost impossible to mock up so it is shown in it’s full form photographed on my porch.
