This painting arrived in a weekend of creative flow.
Built from layers of magenta, deep blues, watery greens, soft yellows, and small flickers of pink light, the piece began to take on an atmosphere that reminded me of water lilies, reflections, and the feeling of something half emerging from beneath the surface. As an adolescent girl, long before I ever read Hamlet, I had a postcard of The Death of Ophelia by John Everett Millais taped to my mirror. Something about this piece reminds me of that (although much happier)
After the acrylic layers dried, I used an oil stick on canvas for the first time. When I touched the oil to the canvas it was like a key unlocked inside of me and I know this is the beginning of something really special. I rubbed parts of the oil gently into the surface by hand, creating foggy places, softened edges, and a sense of movement that feels almost suspended in water or memory.
While painting, I kept thinking about feminine authorship, hidden voices, and the women whose brilliance moved through history unnamed or softened around the edges. (I was listening to jodi Picoult’s by Any Other Name)
The title Echoes of Ophelia nods towards those thoughts.
This piece is less about drowning, or madness and more about telling the truth.

When you purchase an original, if you don’t choose to pick it up from the studio you will be sent an additional invoice for shipping costs.
