Do you have a favorite book?

For me, books have always been some of the most important things in the world. One of the first books I ever fell in love with was “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” By Betty Smith.

The antagonist Francie Nolan grows (and turns out pretty great) up despite a harsh and impoverished life (these days we would say her upbringing had been full of trauma). But she is resilient like the tree of heaven that would grown in the yard of the building she and her family lived in.

I’ve been wanting to create a self portrait with this book for awhile and after cleaning out the shed this week and finding a picture of me hanging upside down at age 3 I thought I might just finally have the inspiration I need to attempt this piece.

I overcame the fear of getting in trouble with my mom for destroying this book, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith, (or you could say giving it new life).

The piece came together slowly.

I gesso’d on the pages and then layered it was squares of loose canvas. Then I traced on the picture of three year old me me hanging upside down on a jungle gym and filled it in with oil pastels and finally adding details like the tree of life at the bottom, bits of chain link fence to signify the mental blocks we need to overcome to step into resilience, and finally adding a few of my favorite quotes from the book.
