Entering the River
24 × 24
Mixed Media on Canvas
Collection: Mending, In Practice
This painting came just before a series of works that arrived in quick succession.
At the time, I was searching — not for an image, but for a feeling. I wanted to see if I could bring a certain kind of energy onto the canvas: something light, expansive, and alive.
The piece began by painting over an earlier work. A field of robin’s-egg blue created the foundation, allowing fragments of the older painting to remain visible beneath the surface. Layers of lime green, pink, and gold followed, slowly shifting the atmosphere of the piece.
Clusters of bright magenta dots were added before I tilted the canvas, allowing the pigment to move and run slightly. Gestural movements of gold and violet cross the surface like currents moving through water.
The painting carries a quiet celestial quality — color suspended, movement beginning.
Looking back, I see this piece as a threshold.
It was the moment I stepped into the current of what this collection would become. Without this painting, the works that followed — including Ripples of Delight — would not have emerged in the same way.
In the practice of mending, there is often a moment like this: when we stop standing at the edge and step into something that will carry us forward.
