On the Threshold, Softly Entered

18x24 • Mixed Media on Canvas

This piece began on New Year’s Eve with a light wash of yellow ochre, and unfolded across the first days of the new year. I’ve heard it said that whatever you’re doing on New Year’s Day, you’ll be doing all year long, so I chose to enter gently.

I honored my Joy of Missing Out with an early night. I woke when my body was ready. I made a French press of coffee, wrote morning pages, read, ran — and then I created.

Magenta followed. Then blue and brown. After the paint had dried, I returned with pencil scribbles, orange oil pastel marks, and soft white polka dots — small gestures layered in response to a growing urgency to make. To get things out. To let what was inside me move.

This piece holds the feeling of standing at a threshold and choosing not to rush through it. Of beginning without spectacle. Of listening closely and allowing creativity to lead the way forward.

A quiet entry.
A deliberate one.
A soft yes to what wants to come next.
